This was a chain of motels that existed mainly in the southeastern United States when I was a kid in the 1970’s. I suppose a few stragglers might still be around but, as a group, I believe it is defunct as the Admiral Benbow Inns website recently disappeared from the Net. I don’t think my parents ever chose to stay in one on our vacations but, viewing them from the car, they never looked like anything special and certainly nothing like their inspiration from Treasure Island. Despite that tie-in, I always thought it was a very weird selection for naming a motel chain with locations that were hundreds of miles inland. Then again, the Long John Silver’s seafood restaurant chain was founded in Lexington, Kentucky, so go figure.
