Is that a Crockett in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?Aside from being terribly phallic, this photograph is also frightening once it is realized that the item at the end of this artillery piece (basically a glorified bazooka) is a “Davy Crockett” nuclear projectile. Clicking on the picture will take you to the full post at Restricted Data: The Nuclear Secrecy Blog where you can see it at full size plus learn about this bizarre field weapon (an article that is quite fun to read despite the scary subject).

This audio file intrigued me so much that I was inspired to do a little bit of research on it. Conveniently enough, I do not have to write the story myself as two other blogs have already taken care of it.

I somehow missed a great post about Survive-All Shelters at one of my most favorite blogs, CONELRAD Adjacent (the place where CONELRAD.com posts the bulk of its material). The post can be found here:

CONELRAD Adjacent: The Survive-All Shelters Sales Kit (1961)

Perhaps even better is the Dinosaur Gardens blog posted audio files of all ten ads in the series to either stream or download in a convenient ZIP file. That post can be found here:

Grable Test - Operation Upshot-Knothole - Nevada Proving Grounds - Nye County, Nevada USA - May 25, 1953Photo courtesy of the National Nuclear Security Administration/Nevada Site Office.Grable is notable for being the first time a nuclear test was performed using an atomic bomb encased in a shell that was shot out of a piece of artillery. The thinking at the time was that such a weapon was needed to assure more accuracy in neutralizing an advancing Soviet army than could be achieved from an airborne delivery where an errant drop would have been disastrous. Of course, never mind that the poor understanding in those days of what was an acceptable dose of radiation would have also eventually neutralized the Allied forces that would have been ordered to march right into the blast area to “clean up” any remaining Warsaw Pact troops…which would then have left western Europe wide open for a second wave from the massive Red Army…which would then have left the USA no choice but to start bombing Russian cities…which would then have caused most of us to not be here now and those that did have surviving parents and grandparents would be posting incessant pictures on Tumblr of kittens with three eyes.
